PRESERVATION TECHNIQUES

Proper materials will help preserve your artwork, but the methods used in framing will also determine the length of time your work will last.

Evidence of improperly framed work could be fading of the art or discoloration. This could be from acids being released from a non-archival mat to work hanging in flourescent or direct sunlight without UV glazing. However, what can not be immediately seen are the materials and methods of adhering the art to its mounting board. Often times we come across art that has been taped to the mat with masking or scotch tape which will acid burn your paperworks.

At MH Art & Framing, we use hinging techniques that are designed to protect the work being matted and framed. Because each piece of art has its own requirements, we will consult with you on the proper method needed.

VARIABLES IN PRESERVATION

While we can use all the precautions to preserve your work of art, there are variables that can affect the condition of your work.

Environment should be considered when hanging precious works as flourescent and direct sunlight will affect the pigments of your piece. Extreme temperature changes can affect the art as well as it shrinks and expands.

The art itself can be suspect as well, depending on the archival approach from the artist. What substrate was used and how it was prepared can be affected by the pigments used by the artist.

Because of these variables, most collectors inspect their works periodically for mold, discoloration or foxing; all of which should be treated by a reputable restorer.
